Donald Claflin



An American jewelry designer who created designs for Tiffany & Co. during the sixties and seventies. Born in Massachusetts, he studied  at the Parsons School of Design in New York. He soon became known as an innovative designer. Much of the whimsical jewelry he designed for Tiffany & Co. followed in the tradition of Jean Schlumberger. Claflin also created jewelry for Bulgari. The pieces he created for Bulgari were more modern, with beautiful curves and clean lines. He is well known for his crossover rings.


Albert Nipon

An American fashion designer and ladies-clothing manufacturer. He was born and raised in West Philadelphia. The fashion world  was stunned at how popular his label became, especially with celebrities such as Barbara Walters.  Sales of Albert Nipon dresses reached 60 million in 1984.

Roy Halston Frowick was born on April 23, 1932 in Des Moines Iowa. In 1952.he moved to Chicago  where he enrolled at the Art Institute of Chicago. In late 1957 he moved to New York City, made connections, and a name for himself as a milliner at classy shops in the city. At one point he designed uniforms for Braniff Airlines. Halston is best remembered for the beautiful, fluid lines of his gowns, and his jet set lifestyle.
Jack Mulqueen
Known as "fast jack", Mulqueen developed a label, which 
included big name designers such as Mary McFadden and
Kenzo. In the 80's his designs were very popular, and
consistently featured in stores like Saks Fifth Avenue,
Bergdorf's, and Bloomingdale's. His upscale designs,
primarily silk day dresses, crepe de chine skirts and tops
were fresh, and very wearable.
Willi Smith
Successful African-American Designer from Philadelphia, 
founded  WilliWear, designed for films and celebrities
. Coty Award for women's fashion, 25 million in annual sales. 
Betsy Johnson
She was the most important designer to emerge out of the  
boutique scene. Betsy Johnson
started at Paraphernalia in 1965, and became 
known for luxe as well as whimsical design. Her fashions 
have remained popular well into the 21st century 
Anne Klein
Anne Klein founded Junior sophisticates in 1948.
She was born in Brooklyn in 1928 and
began working drawing fashion sketches at age 
15. Well- known for her petite line of clothing, sportswear,  
and coordinating separates..
Dimitri Kritsas
His Mediterranean heritage may have inspired his
designs: rich colors, gild and brocades, with exotic
features. Kritsas is New York City a lot, and  designed for   
trendy stores such as Paraphernalia. He was something 
of a darling for the jet set of the 70's.
The development of American Fashion was propelled by stores such as Lord & Taylor's, which in fact, manufactured the clothes in-house. Originally, fine clothing carried the labels of the stores, not the designers.
